Supermarket sales fatten Cincinnati restaurants’ wallets
Long before national restaurant chains began to find love in the supermarket, little family-run eateries already had discovered sales opportunities in the local grocery aisle. And why not? It helps build shopper loyalty, said Jim Hertel, managing partner at Willard Bishop, a suburban Chicago food retail expert. Further, with the economy forcing consumers to cut back, the supermarket has been gaining interest. About 52 percent of food dollars are spent away from home – that is a sizable budget for supermarkets to target. As Charlie Howard, spokesman for Gold Star Chili, put it: “In addition to the incremental revenue benefits, the retail line significantly increases our brand footprint in Greater Cincinnati.” That’s because shoppers see the company logo in the store, and in their cupboards. Following is a sample of family chains and the products they sell at the grocery.
